Roll forging is performed using two cylindrical or semi-cylindrical rolls, each containing one or more shaped grooves. Open-die forging is also known as smith forging. In open-die forging, a hammer strikes and deforms the workpiece, which is placed on a stationary anvil. Forging improves the toughness and strength of improving orientation of the metal grain structure.
